COMMENTS: Aram Lent 2 practical 1=#E has been studying features of music from the Baroque period as well as composing in this style. #H ongoing target is to work on writing smoother "singable" melodies, which #e will continue to practise in future composition work. 2=#E has been studying features of music from the Baroque period as well as composing in this style. #E can write pleasingly "singable" melodies, following advice to arrange the pitches in smooth shapes, and start and end on the key note. 3=#E has been studying features of music from the Baroque period as well as composing in this style. #E can write pleasingly "singable" melodies, following advice to arrange the pitches in smooth shapes, and to develop further #e could vary the rhythms more. 4=#E has been studying features of music from the Baroque period as well as composing in this style. #E has a great sense of what sounds musical when writing melodies, and #e is now developing #h ability to write harmonies as well. 5=#E has been studying features of music from the Baroque period as well as composing in this style. #E has a great sense of what sounds musical; to develop further as a composer #e should try not always to let #h creativity have free reign, but to work within the parameters of the assignment! 6=After initially being tempted to let creativity have free reign in #h composition work, #N has learned to work within the parameters of the style of the Baroque period to recreate and understand more about some of its features. COMMENTS: Aram Lent 3 assessment 1=#N achieved #percentage% in #h end-of-term assessment on all the musical styles we have studied so far, from the Medieval to the Baroque periods. This was quite a pleasing score, with perhaps a little room for further revision in the future. 8=#N achieved #percentage% in #h end-of-term assessment on all the musical styles we have studied so far, from the Medieval to the Baroque periods. This reflects the fact that #N doesn't find written assessment easy, but #e has still demonstrated understanding of many aspects of these topics. COMMENTS: Form 1 Lent 1 intro 1=#N has had a good term in which #e has mainly concentrated well and developed the skills of listening, responding and performing. Our focus has been practising showing a steady beat when playing. 2=Although #N can take a while to settle when it comes to the excitement of visiting the Music Department, #e has had a good term in which #e has developed the skills of listening, responding and performing. Our main focus has been practising showing a steady beat when playing along to recorded music. 3=#N enjoys #h weekly visits to the Music Department and looking at all the instruments, asking lots of questions about the individual instrumental lessons that go on. Our main focus has been continuing to develop the skills of listening, responding and performing, in particular showing a steady beat when playing along to music. 4=#N enjoys #h weekly visits to the Music Department, in particular showing #h friends the room in which #e has #h individual #instrument lessons. Our main focus in lessons has been practising showing a steady beat when playing along to music. COMMENTS: Form 1 Lent 2 body 1=In a crossover with phonics learning, #e has created patterns using letter sounds and performed them in time to a beat, using instruments such as woodblocks, triangles, bells and maracas. 2=#E has used letter sounds to create patterns which have been performed in time with a beat. These have then been transferred onto instruments such as woodblocks, triangles, bells and maracas. 3=In a crossover with phonics learning, #e has created patterns using letter sounds and performed them in time to a beat, then taken these skills and transferred them onto instruments such as woodblocks, triangles, bells and maracas. #N has demonstrated a strong sense of rhythm in these tasks. COMMENTS: Form 1 Lent 3 body 1=On investigating pitched and unpitched instruments, #N was able to identify that a piano, for example, is a pitched instrument, because it can play higher and lower notes, but a drum is an unpitched instrument. 2=On investigating pitched and unpitched instruments, #N was able to identify that a guitar, for example, is a pitched instrument, because it can play higher and lower notes, but a triangle is an unpitched instrument. 3=On investigating pitched and unpitched instruments, #N was able to explain that #h own instrument, a #instrument, is a pitched instrument, because it can play higher and lower notes, but something like a wood block is an unpitched instrument. 4=#N was happy to explain to the class that a piano is a pitched instrument and can play very high as well as very low notes. We compared this with various unpitched instruments which can only play one sound. COMMENTS: Form 1 Lent 4 summing up 1=#N always tries #h best and is progressing well in Music. 2=#N can be proud of #h work this term. 3=#N is still working on remembering to put #h hand up to contribute, but is always enthusiastic and engaged. 4=#N is always keen to answer questions and has a lot to contribute. 5=#N often volunteers to answer questions, and has tried hard. 6=Although I would like #N to be keener to volunteer ideas, #e has tried hard this term. COMMENTS: Form 2 Lent 1 intro 1=#N has learned to read increasingly complex rhythms this term, playing these on percussion instruments in ensemble with others in #h class. 2=#N has been performing increasingly complex rhythms this term, learning to play on the correct beat, and listening for the correct number of rests before starting to play. COMMENTS: Form 2 Lent 2 body 1=#E has shown in #h workbook that #e understands how to create rhythmic patterns using vocal sounds, and the importance of using silence as well as sound. 2=#E has carefully combined vocal sounds and silences into musically pleasing patterns, then moving on to apply this skill to percussion sounds. 3=When composing rhythm patterns, #N likes to create unpredictable sequences of vocal and percussion sounds, which are challenging to perform. COMMENTS: Form 2 Lent 3 summing up 1=#E always maintains #h enthusiasm for answering questions and participating fully in class discussions. 2=#E continues to demonstrate a thoughtful attitude and participates fully in every task. 3=#E always participates well and remains engaged with the lesson content. 4=#N sometimes needs prompting to take part in tasks or discussions, but when asked directly, #e gives accurate answers. COMMENTS: Form 2 Lent 4 singing comment 1=#E loves learning a new song, and is a natural performer with a good memory for lyrics. Well done, #N, a good term. 2=This is similarly the case when learning new songs; with concentration #e does really well. COMMENTS: Form 4 Lent 1 Intro (violin) 1=#N has continued to learn the violin this term, and has shown some great progress in learning to read the music to identify the correct string to play. I notice that #h eyes are glued to the music a lot more often, rather than #m looking at me to copy what I am doing. 2=We have continued to learn the violin in class this term, and #N has gained a lot more confidence with the instrument, although occasionally mixes up #h hands. The coordination required is certainly tricky but #e shows great determination. 3=I have continued to be impressed by #N's natural aptitude for the violin. #H posture and coordination, as well as ability to listen to others in the ensemble, are fantastic! 4=It is lovely to see #N continuing to enjoy #h individual violin lessons, and #e therefore has the confidence and ability to lead or demonstrate to the class when they are learning. 5=#N has continued to enjoy learning the violin, and having to restrain #s to play in time with the class as an ensemble, rather than doing #h own thing, is proving a great developer of listening skills and patience! COMMENTS: Form 4 Lent 2 body (theory) 1=In other lessons, #e has enjoyed the challenge of some Grade 1 Music Theory, learned about texture and timbre, and composed some rhythms using crotchets, quavers and rests. 2=In more theory-based lessons, #e has started some Grade 1 notation exercises, including composing rhythms, and learned about the musical elements of timbre and texture. 3=The musical elements of timbre and texture have been studied, and #e has started working through some Grade 1 Music Theory exercises. 4=The musical elements of timbre and texture have been studied, and #e has started working through some Grade 1 Music Theory exercises, which will support work done in #h #instrument lessons. COMMENTS: Form 4 Lent 3 summing 1=#N always has a sensible attitude towards the work in hand, and is keen to answer questions, which demonstrates and expands #h understanding. 2=It has been great to see #N's focus on #h learning really develop - #e is always keen to expand #h skills and understanding. 3=While #N can struggle to contain #s when #e wants to say or play something, it is great that #e is always enthusiastic about participating. 4=#N is always calm, sensible, cooperative, and contributes a great deal. #E continues to be a pleasure to teach. 5=#N is developing good classroom etiquette, coming in calmly and waiting to find out what is on the agenda. This positive attitude to learning is great to see. 6=#N is a sociable #b and would occasionally prefer to chat about something completely unrelated to the lesson, but #e is always willing to be brought back to task and #h focus is developing. COMMENTS: Leckby Lent 1 Intro 1=#N continues to work towards #h Trinity Bronze Arts Award, this term concentrating on researching the career of an artist. 2=The aim this term has been for #N to continue working towards the Trinity Bronze Arts Award by researching the career of an artist. COMMENTS: Leckby Lent 2 artist career 1=#E has chosen to look into the career of #h #artist, and will follow this up next term with a presentation, podcast or magazine article. 2=#E has chosen to look into the career of a member of "Alligator Gumbo", a local band who play New Orleans style jazz and blues. 3=#E has chosen to look into the career of #artist that #e knows, and will follow this up next term with a presentation, podcast or magazine article. COMMENTS: Leckby Lent 3 attitude in class 1=With written work both in class and prep, #N has been organised and diligent, making it easy for me to compile #h portfolio for the award. 2=Although it has taken a little chasing to get all of #N's work organised for #h portfolio, it has always been done to a high standard. 3=It has been a little tricky to get #N to complete written work, or at least to submit it on Google Classroom on the correct assignment so that I can see it to mark and put in #h portfolio. 4=I have been pleased with #N's organisation with #h written work, which has made it easy for me to compile #h portfolio for the award. 5=It has taken a little chasing to ensure that all of #N's written work has been submitted for #h portfolio, but I pleased that #e is up to date at the moment. COMMENTS: Leckby Lent 4 targets 1=#H target with #h ongoing musical composition work is to reflect on how well it creates the desired atmosphere for each project, using technological effects and samples from external sources where appropriate. 2=#E is doing well with #h ongoing musical compositions, and is now starting to use advanced techniques such as technological sound effects, which #e should continue to explore next term. 3=There is still quite a lot of work to do on #h musical compositions, and having experimented with different sounds, #N should now try to set #s small sections to focus on and perfect each lesson. 4=#E is doing fairly well with #h ongoing musical compositions, although #e is sometimes often quite distracted by wanting to listen to those of other pupils instead of getting on with #h own, and is now starting to use advanced techniques such as technological sound effects, which #e should continue to explore next term. 5=There is still quite a lot of work to do on #h musical compositions in regard to structuring and adding technological effects. Next term, therefore, I would like #N to come into every lesson ready to settle to work immediately, rather than catching up on conversations with #h friends first. 6=Recently I have been impressed with a more diligent attitude from #N, and less focus on what #h friends are doing. I hope #e continues next term in the habit of coming into every lesson ready to settle down to work immediately, as #e has been making fantastic progress on #h compositions when #e does. 7=#N would make progress with #h musical compositions, which #e enjoys doing once #e has got going, by coming into every lesson ready to settle down and work, rather than prioritising conversations with #h friends and ignoring the given instructions. #E is a musical #b with huge potential to do well. 8=#N would make progress with #h musical compositions, which #e enjoys doing once #e has got going, by coming into every lesson ready to settle down and work, rather than prioritising conversations with #h friends or watching unrelated YouTube videos! 9=I am sorry that #N won't get to finish the award, but I hope #e has enjoyed learning how to use the composition software and finding out more about the arts. I wish #m the very best at #h new school. COMMENTS: Reception Lent 1 intro 1=This term, the class has explored loud and quiet sounds, both through listening and composing. COMMENTS: Reception Lent 2 body 1=Voices and hand-held percussion have both been used to experiment with changing sounds, and pupils have practised taking it in turns to play their sounds according to colour patterns that they see on the board. COMMENTS: Reception Lent 3 summing-up 1=They have continued to link sounds and symbols, supporting literacy and listening skills. COMMENTS: Sample summing-up sentences 1=#N always tries #h best and has achieved a well-deserved Level #? overall. An excellent performance, keep it up! 2=#N has reached Level #?. This was #h target and #e should be proud of #s. To ensure #e keeps this up next year #e should #How-to-improve. 3=#N has achieved a Level #? overall. #E often works below #h best and with a little more effort #e could easily reach Level #?. To improve #e should #How-to-improve. 4=#N has not had the best of starts this year and is still working at Level #?. #E rarely completes #h work on time. To achieve more next year #e needs to #How-to-improve. COMMENTS: Started or stopped a musical instrument 1=I am so pleased that #N has started having #instrument lessons this term, and I hope #e continues to enjoy them. 2=It's a shame that #N has ceased #h #instrument lessons this term, but I hope that it may be something that #e comes back to in the future. 3=It was great to hear #N perform in the House Music Competition class concert; #h classmates really enjoyed hearing #m. COMMENTS: Swale Lent 1 topic work performance 1=#N has studied various world music traditions this term, including blues, reggae, samba, folk music and West African drumming. In class, although #e can become distracted easily, #e has generally produced a good standard of written work. 2=#N has studied various world music traditions this term, including blues, reggae, samba, folk music and West African drumming. Although #e has not particularly enjoyed the associated written work, #e has been interested in learning about the cultural contexts of these styles. 3=#N has studied various world music traditions this term, including blues, reggae, samba, folk music and West African drumming. #E has mostly concentrated very well and has been interested in the cultural contexts of the different styles. 4=#N has studied various world music traditions this term, including blues, reggae, samba, folk music and West African drumming. #E has completed the work to a satisfactory standard, although there have often been distractions to deal with such as untidy uniform, chatting to neighbours, or a Chromebook with a flat battery. 5=#N has studied various world music traditions this term, including blues, reggae, samba, folk music and West African drumming. #E has worked well in every lesson, answering questions and completing written work to a high standard. COMMENTS: Swale Lent 2 homework 1=Preps, which have focused on revising and consolidating work done in the lesson, have been completed in a suitable amount of detail, and has been is great to see #m demonstrating #h understanding in #h written work. 2=I have sometimes had to follow up on missing preps, which have mainly been aimed at consolidating and reviewing work done in lessons. However, those that have been completed on time have been done well. 3=Preps, which have focused on revising and consolidating work done in lessons, have generally been excellent with a high level of detail and analysis included. 4=Preps, which have focused on revising and consolidating work done in lessons, show that #N is good at describing the "feel" of different styles of music, and now needs to work on identifying the musical features that create the style. COMMENTS: Swale Lent 3 assessment 1=#N achieved #percentage% in the end-of-topic assessment, which was an excellent score, the highest in the class, and was evidence of #h revision and understanding of all our work so far. 2=#N achieved #percentage% in the end-of-topic assessment, which was an excellent score, and was evidence of #h revision and understanding of all our work so far. 3=#N achieved #percentage% in the end-of-topic assessment, which was a very good score, and was evidence of #h revision and understanding of all our work so far. 4=#N achieved #percentage% in the end-of-topic assessment, which was a very respectable score, and was evidence of #h revision and understanding of all our work so far. 5=#N's score of #percentage% on the end-of-topic assessment was a little lower than I would have liked, so perhaps more thorough revision is needed to perform to the best of #h ability. 6=I felt that #N's score of #percentage% on the end-of-topic assessment was a fair reflection of #h written work this term. 7=#N did not perform quite as well in the end-of-topic assessment as on other pieces of written work, but #h score of #percentage% was still promising. 8=I felt that #N's score of #percentage% on the end-of-topic assessment was slightly disappointing, but we will keep revisiting these topics and scaffolding #h knowledge. 9=[ASSESSMENT YET TO COMPLETE] COMMENTS: Thornton Lent 1 Intro 1=The detailed study of Toto's "Africa" and Bach's "Badinerie", the two exam board set works, has given #N the opportunity to go over all elements of music and analysis skills. 2=#N has spent this term revising all elements of music and studying the two set works, Toto's "Africa" and Bach's "Badinerie", in detail. COMMENTS: Thornton Lent 2 Elements 1=#E has in particular seemed to enjoy the intellectual stretch of learning about figured bass and other advanced aspects of harmony. 2=Much of the work we have done on chords, cadences and harmony has overlapped with the work #e is doing towards #m Grade 5 Theory exam, so hopefully has been helpful reinforcement. COMMENTS: Thornton Lent 3 Formative assessments 1=All #h preps have been completed to a high standard, mostly with full marks. Areas to double check in revision would be structures both in classical music (e.g. binary form) and in pop songs (e.g. intro, verse, chorus, instrumental). 2=All #h preps have been completed to a high standard, and it is hugely commendable that on the online quizzes, when #e hasn't achieved full marks, #e has gone back and done them again. What a fantastic attitude to learning. COMMENTS: Thornton Lent 4 Summative assessments 1=In a recent assessment on Areas of Study 1 & 2, #e achieved [YET TO BE COMPLETED]%, a Level [LEVEL TO BE COMPLETED]. COMMENTS: Thornton Lent 5 closing 1=I feel extremely fortunate to have had #N in my GCSE group over the last two years, and am glad that #e allowed #s to be persuaded to take the subject! I thank #m for all #h contributions to the Music Department over the years, and wish #m the very best in #h exams and in the future. 2=I feel extremely fortunate to have had such wonderful pupils in my GCSE group over the last two years.
