We then moved on to studying the properties of matter, such as mass, weight, and density, and then applied these concepts to properties of water. These fundamentals have laid out the groundwork for our next units on atmosphere and weather. 2=This quarter in science we applied our first quarter lessons on properties of matter in order to understand atmosphere and weather. We learned how to read weather maps and what causes different types of weather and how hurricanes occur. We also had a unit on addiction, alcohol, tobacco and drugs. We looked at what causes addiction, and what each drug physically does to the body and mind. At the end of the quarter, the students went online as drug scene investigators to investigate imaginary 3=-------- 4=This quarter in science we have been focusing on the scientific method and on chemistry. We started the year reviewing the scientific method and creating our own lab procedures in order to get them to use their critical thinking skills. We then moved onto chemistry, looking at the make up of an atom and how different parts of the atom can cause changes about the atoms properties. We also did an extensive study on nuclear decay and radioactivity. 5=This quarter in science studied the trends within the periodic table and how the periodic table is organized. Students then used this knowledge to predict how elements come together to form molecules via ionic and covalent bonds. We experimented with behavioral differences between covalent and ionic bonds and which ions readily bond and which ones do not. We learned about conservation of matter and how to balance chemical equations with mathematics, manipulatives and computer simulations. COMMENTS: TRA01: Introduction 1=In the unit 'Earth, Sun and Moon ' #N learnt about the shapes and relative sizes of the Earth, Sun and Moon. #E has learnt how these three bodies moved relative to each other and how these movements were related to night and day.#H experimental and investigative work in this unit focused on #m making #h own observations and recognising the patterns in both first hand and secondary data.#E then represented this data in #h own graphs. The work in this unit offered #m several opportunit COMMENTS: TRA02: Appliances 1=Section 1: Finding electrical appliances 2=#E was able to identify appliances which used electricity e.g. lamps, tape recorders, televisions and those which do not e.g. a pencil-sharpener, a stapler. 3=#E was able to record the appliances into categories and justify #h groupings e.g. #E said that the tape recorder and the radio both made sounds. COMMENTS: TRA02: Circuits 1=Section 1: Changing circuits 2=#E is able to summarise the ways in which the brightness of bulbs or speed of motors can be changed. 3=#E is able to construct circuits that match the descriptions given to #m by #h teacher. COMMENTS: TRA02: Earth 1=Section 2: Flat or spherical? 2=Children: 3=#E recognises that the Earth, Sun and Moon are spheres. 4=#E is able to describe some indirect evidence that the Earth is spherical. COMMENTS: TRA02: Groups 1=Section 1: Grouping solids and liquids 2=#E can identify characteristic properties of solids and liquids. COMMENTS: TRA02: Sorting 1=Section 2: Sorting liquids from solids 2=#E has correctly classified materials as liquid or solid and explained the reasons for #h choices. 3=#E was able to describe the similarities between solids e.g. they don't change shape when you move them and between liquids e.g. they move when you tilt the bottle and differences between solids and liquids e.g. you can pour the liquids but not the solids 4=#E successfully classified 'tricky items' such as rice and sponges as solids. COMMENTS: TRA03: Air 1=Section 2: Understanding air 2=#E has used the phenomena related to moving air e.g. on kites, parachutes, drying washing and to the effects of pumping up inflatable objects to support the idea that air is real. COMMENTS: TRA03: Drawing 1=Section 2: Drawing circuits with symbols 2=#E is able to construct a circuit from a conventional circuit diagram. 3=#E has drawn a circuit diagram of a working circuit. 4=#E examined an unfamiliar diagram of a simple circuit and #e explained how #e knew whether it would work or not when constructed. COMMENTS: TRA03: Mains 1=Section 2: Mains and battery-powered circuits 2=#E has recorded in simple terms the characteristics of devices using mains electricity. COMMENTS: TRA03: Safety 1=Section 2: Electrical safety 2=#E is able to tell someone e.g. a visitor, parent, other child that mains sockets are dangerous e.g. the electricity is so powerful it could kill #m. #E knows that plugs should not be touched with wet hands. COMMENTS: TRA03: Size&Distance 1=Section 3: Size and distance 2=Children: 3=#E was able to select three spheres to represent the Earth, Sun and Moon. #E recognised which was largest and which was the smallest and made a reasonable match to the relative sizes. COMMENTS: TRA03: Volumes 1=Section 3: Measuring volume 2=#E was able to measure accurately volumes of liquids and record these and observations of shape in a table. 3=#E has used #h results to conclude that although liquids change shape when they are poured into a different container they do not change volume. COMMENTS: TRA04: Batteries 1=Section 3: Using batteries and making connections 2=#E has used devices with batteries, drawn and labelled some of these e.g. bicycle lamps, hearing aids. 3=#E was able to explain why a particular device required a particular battery eg a watch is very small so it needs a small battery. 4=#E has identified some of the ways in which batteries might be dangerous e.g. a small child might swallow one, if the battery were cut open the chemicals could escape and cause harm. COMMENTS: TRA04: Day & Night 1=Section 4: The changing position of the Sun Section 5: The movement of the Earth 2=#E was able to describe how the apparent position of the Sun changes over the course of a day and #e was able to clarify that this does not mean that the Sun is moving. 3=#E illustrated by using models that different parts of the Earth face the Sun during the course of the day and #e recognised where in the model it is day and where it is night. 4=#E illustrated by using drawings that different parts of the Earth face the Sun during the course of the day. #E is able to say where on the drawing it is day and where it is night. 5=#E is able to explain that the apparent movement of the Sun is a result of the Earth rotating or spinning. COMMENTS: TRA04: Experiment 1=Section 3: Conducting electricity 2=#E has constructed a circuit to test which materials let electricity pass through them. 3=#E has explained that with some materials the bulb did not light because the circuit was not complete. 4=#E is able to make a generalisation about which materials did or did not conduct electricity. COMMENTS: TRA04: Fine Solids 1=Section 4: Pouring solids 2=Children: 3=#E has described the similarities between powders and liquids e.g. they both can be sieved through gauze, you can use a stream of salt or sand to turn a wheel like a water wheel. 4=#E is able to explain that the powders flow like liquids because they have very fine particles. COMMENTS: TRA04: Sponges 1=Section 3: Thinking about powders and sponges 2=#E was able to describe how bubbles appear. 3=#E is able to identify that bubbles in powders and sponges appear from the spaces between the particles, and with help, #e can suggest they are air. COMMENTS: TRA04: Testing 1=Section 3: Testing circuits 2=#E has tried out a wide variety of circuits and decided what to do. #E was able to make sure that #h comparisons between the circuits were fair. 3=#E could state whether #h prediction was correct and #e has made a number of generalisations about circuits such as the thinner the wire, the dimmer the bulb. COMMENTS: TRA05: Circuits 1=Section 4-6: Making a circuit 2=#N has made #h own working circuits. #E has used bulbs and buzzers in #h work and successfully made #h own drawings of these and #h circuits. 3=#E can recognise simple drawings of circuits which will not work e.g. with connections to only one terminal of battery or a circuit with a break and #e is able to to explain why the bulb will not light. 4=#E interprets drawings of circuits and makes the correct prediction about which circuits will work. #E can explain #h predictions e.g. saying this won't work because both wires are attached to the same end of the battery. 5=#N has designed, made, tested and demonstrated #h device and explained the importance of a complete circuit in it. COMMENTS: TRA05: Gases 1=Section 4-6: Checking observations and gases 2=#E is able to explain why it is helpful to repeat observations. 3=#E has used measuring jugs or cylinders to make measurements of volume. 4=#E is able to repeat #h measurements to check #h results by using the same quantity of dry soil each time. 5=#E was able to explain that bubbles appear when #e added water to dry soil because water pushed the air out of the spaces between the particles of soil. 6=#E can name several gases and identify one way in which each is useful to us. COMMENTS: TRA05: Investigating 1=Section 4: Investigating circuits 2=#E was able to identify that the wires used in the investigation are much thinner than the wires they use for connections. 3=#E was able to why explain it is safe to use bare wires in #h experiment because #e was using batteries with a low voltage. 4=#E was able to explain that wires are usually covered with plastic because plastic is an insulator. COMMENTS: TRA05: Materials 1=Section 4: Conducting and insulating materials 2=#E is able to explain that metals are used e.g. for cables and wires because they are good conductors and plastics e.g. for plugs because they are insulators. COMMENTS: TRA05: Melting 1=Section 5: Freezing and melting & Section 6: Melting temperatures 2=#E was able to explain how to turn water to ice and ice to water. 3=#N has described that ice melts when it is left in a room but that some other things have to be warmed to make them melt. 4=#E was able to describe what has to be done to turn a metal or lava into a liquid and to turn it back to a solid and #e could suggest #h own reasons for why people need to melt metals. COMMENTS: TRA05: Seasons 1=Section 6: The Sun at different times of the year & Section 7: The Earth's orbit 2=#E is able to generalise that the Sun rises in the East and sets in the West. 3=#E has drawn some simple graphs and identified the patterns in day length over the year. 4=#E is able to state that a year is the time taken for the Earth to make one complete orbit of the Sun. #E has understood this fact know from secondary sources by independenty reading reference books, CD-ROMs and information provided by #h teacher. COMMENTS: TRA06: Evaporation 1=Section 7: Evaporation 2=#E is able to identify the process which takes place when water changes to a gas as evaporation. 3=#E has identified a range of contexts in which water evaporates . COMMENTS: TRA06: Moon-s orbit 1=Section 8: The Moon's orbit 2=#N was able to explain that the pattern and time-scale of the changes in the Moon's appearance over 28 days was evidence that the Moon orbits the Earth once every 28 days. COMMENTS: TRA06: Sorting Solids 1=Sections 7-9: Mixing solids 2=#E is able to separate a mixture. 3=#E can explain that mixtures can often be separated by sieving because the large grains won't go through the holes but the small ones will. 4=#E could describe the different types of behaviour when solids are mixed with water e.g. sand and glass beads settle on the bottom, you can't see salt and sugar any more, the plaster of Paris makes a hard solid with the water. 5=#E was able to explain that the sieves will separate marbles from water but not sand eg the marbles are too big to go through the holes but the sand is small enough. 6=#E can explain that filters are like sieves with very small holes which the small pieces of sand and chalk cannot go through. COMMENTS: TRA06: Switches 1=Section 5: Switches 2=#E can construct a circuit in which a switch turns a specific device on or off. 3=#E is able to explain how #h switch works. COMMENTS: TRA07: Batteries 1=Section 6: Adding batteries 2=Children: 3=#E has described what is likely to happens to the light bulbs when #e adds additional batteries to #h circuit e.g. it may be brighter but it may burn out. COMMENTS: TRA07: Gases 1=Sections 8-10: Properties of gas 2=#E was able to explain that #e could smell things because the gases entered #h nose. 3=#E has explained that #e can smell many liquids because gases from the liquid travelled through the air to #h nose when some of the liquid evaporated. 4=#E is able to explain that natural gas can cause explosions, and if #e can smell it then #e is detecting a gas leak. 5=#E has described a number of differences between liquids and gases. 6=#N was able to summarise the key differences between solids, liquids and gases. #E identified aspects such as ease of flow, and whether solids, liquids and gases retain their own shape and volume when moved to different containers. COMMENTS: TRA07: Solutions 1=Section 10: Making solutions 2=#E was able to suggest how to test #h predictions about separating salt and water. 3=#E can explain that sugar or salt can't be seen but are still present when it is dissolved in water. 4=#E can explain why filtering cannot separate dissolved sugars or salt from a solution. 5=#N could explain why it was safe to taste the solution e.g. we used clean water and clean beakers and we knew we'd only put salt in. COMMENTS: TRA08: Circuits 2 1=Section 7: Changing circuits 2=#E was able to describe how a device and battery should be matched eg if it's a 1.5 volt bulb it needs a 1.5 volt battery. 3=#N has suggested a way of changing the brightness of a bulb and #e was able to predict what would happen if #e added more bulbs or batteries to #h circuit. 4=#N compares circuits fairly by changing only one factor at a time. 5=#E is able to make comparisons between different circuits.
